Bit Wear

BURNED BIT
  PHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS Burned Bit
  1. Burned bit crown (Matrix & Diamonds)
  PROBABLE CAUSES
  1. Insufficient fluid flow
  2. Split drill rod
  OBSERVATION & POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
  1. Check pump
  2. Check rods for leaks or cracks
  3. Increase fluid flow

O.D.GAGE
  PHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS O.D. Gage
  1. O.D.gage worn
  PROBABLE CAUSES
  1. High RPM
  2. Bit followed worn bit
  3. Vibration
  4. Insufficient fluid
  OBSERVATION & POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
  1. Reduce RPM
  2. Stabilize drill string
  3. Increase fluid rate
  4. Adjust bit weight (slight increase)

CONCAVE CROWN WEAR
  PHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS Concave Crown Wear
  1. Bit face wearing towards I.D.
  PROBABLE CAUSES
  1. Excessive bit weight
  2. "Overdrilling" penetrating faster than cuttings can be removed
  3. Hard broken formation
  4. Possible mislatch
  OBSERVATION & POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
  1. Reduce bit weight
  2. Increase flow rate
  3. Try harder matrix impregnated bit
  4. Clean hole properly before each run
  5. Increase RPM
